"The name Esther was from Persia stara, "star," or from Ishtar, a Babylonian goddess. Her Hebrew name was Hadassah, "myrtle." Esther is also noted for her bravery and her loyalty to her people. Risking her own life by having to reveal for the first time that she was Jewish, she made supplication to the king to sign a new decree to undo Haman's decree against the Jews. Some accuse her of being heartless and vengeful in asking that the Jews might defend themselves and slay their attackers. However, careful study does not sustain these accusations. She exposed the evil plot of Haman and sought to save her people, but the royal decree obtained by her intercession was limited to self-defense."
